Things To Consider While Tracking

Tracking, or the act of following a set path or route through wilderness or unknown terrain, can be a thrilling and rewarding experience. It allows you to explore and discover new areas, while also testing your navigational skills and physical endurance. However, it is important to properly prepare and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and successful trip. Here are some do’s and don’ts for tracking:

DO:

  1. Research the area: Before setting out on your track, be sure to thoroughly research the area you will be visiting. Familiarize yourself with the terrain, climate, and any potential hazards such as dangerous animals or unstable weather conditions.
  2. Plan your route: It is important to have a clear plan and route in mind before setting out on your track. This can include mapping out your path using a map or GPS device, as well as considering any detours or alternatives in case of unforeseen circumstances.
  3. Pack appropriately: Proper packing is essential for a successful track. Be sure to bring all necessary gear and supplies, such as a map, compass, first-aid kit, and food and water. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather and terrain, and consider bringing a waterproof layer in case of rain.
  4. Stay alert and aware: Pay attention to your surroundings at all times while on your track. Keep an eye out for potential hazards and be aware of your surroundings to avoid getting lost or injured.
  5. Leave a trip plan: It is important to let someone know your track plans, including your route and expected return time. This will allow them to alert authorities if you do not return as expected.

DON’T:

  1. Go alone: It is generally not recommended to go tracking alone. If possible, bring a partner or group with you for safety and support.
  2. Underestimate the terrain: Do not underestimate the difficulty or challenges of the terrain you will be facing. Be realistic about your skills and abilities, and do not push yourself beyond your limits.
  3. Ignore safety precautions: Do not disregard safety precautions such as wearing proper clothing and footwear, or carrying a first-aid kit. These precautions can mean the difference between a successful track and a dangerous situation.
  4. Disrespect the environment: Be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles while on your track, which means leaving the area as you found it and not damaging the environment or wildlife.

By following these do’s and don’ts and properly preparing for your track, you can have a safe and enjoyable experience. Remember to always be alert, aware, and respectful of your surroundings, and have fun exploring the great outdoors.
